| 4 Mar 2008 | Harry David Frost | Loading..."The Tale of Genji" is wonderful...I have read above that you refer to the ’purple’ signification, (a wonderful use of colour, I think; it’s stormy water, drowned lovers- a succession of Post-Modern images! One wonders if Mr. A A Anaxagoras knows what he’s taking about...or knows what his name means...also why Aeschylus is such a popular names for malcontents and prudes...) but I can’t help feeling that it is such a wonderful portrayal of Shikibu’s concept of femeninity; in particular, femeninity seen thorugh Genji’s male eyes. The gestures are half dismissive, half benefactory, almost ’religious’, which, for me, fits with the sort of shrine of half-worship, half-rejection the men of the Tale build around their women. So while you say above you titled it as ’purple’, I find its greatest strength is in manifesting the sentiment of the novel. I was interested in your quotation from a ’grimmer samurai’- have you read Hagakure? "I have heard that the way of the Samurai is Death" quotes everybody, condemning it as dangerous and nihilist; but, reading "Yukio Mishima on Hagakure" a really good commentary, you kind of see what they mean, and it isn’t that grim. Thank you, anyway. | |
