  | Another winged frog...and this one's actually a real painting, acrylic, 18 x 36. I don't know if you've ever had this experience, but I've heard it occasionally from other artists--this painting made me it's biatch. I couldn't stop work on it. I tried several times to do something else, and within ten minutes, I was hunched back over the masonite, gnawing on my paintbrush and then remembering I'd used the end to stir gesso with and having to go rinse my mouth out. It was insistent. It drove me out into blazing sun, heat index of 110, to buy dendrobium orchids from a store a mile away, and then it had me digging through pictures of African whiteheaded buffalo weavers to find the markings that I wanted. The Muse was in a foul mood, and I was the recipient. It's not as if it's even that particularly great a painting, but it was by! god! going to be painted right then, or else. Then, when I was finally done, two days later, and laying in a sort of drained stupor, staring at it, my boyfriend walked in and said 'Red, white, and blue frog? Should I salute? No, wait--he needs a little NFL helmet...' I don't remember much about the next few minutes, but they tell me I cracked some kind of record for obscenity and invective, right before I tried to smother myself with a pillow. (Original sold!) |
