A common sight in parks and gardens, the raucous but colorful Stellar's frogjay...This painting was inspired by a dream I had. I was wandering through a field of foxglove, and saw all these hummingbirds. None of them had actual hummingbird markings though--there was a bluejay, a Holstein cow, so on and so forth. I woke up, clutched the edges of the futon and shouted 'Eureka!' Flip the markings! Wildlife surrealism! For the past week, I've been positive drunk on ideas--blue tailed cats chasing calico skinks, striped hummingbirds baiting ruby-throated tigers, pinstriped lions chasing tawny zebras, and of course, frogs. Frogs! Emperor penguin frogs in the arctic, husky frogs pulling frogsleds, puffin frogs clinging to cliffsides...well, anyway, forgive my enthusiasm. Expect a series. I hammered this out in one impassioned afternoon...The real challenge was getting the frog markings to suggest those of a bluejay. There's a companion piece in the works with a pair of goldfinch frogs--originally they were one painting, but the composition simply wasn't working so I did some aggressive surgery, much to the betterment of the whole. It might still need something over in the lower right quadrant...

Out on a limb, I'd recommend a ladybug spider. Somthing bright red would complement the greens and blues, somthing smaller that than the frog would keep it from overpowering the composition, and something alive just seems more your style.

However, I'm not sure that a red-legged ladybird spider is really the best. It fits the them of animals marked as other animals, but something more mundane like a red ribbon might lend more credibility to the work.

Of course, it might be just the place to put your signature. Its up to you
